Paying for AOP and AO-db - Ads

I know it's not the most ideal thing in the world but I think we may have to have ads on the site to pay for it. What do you think?
i'm sure hey had a good reason no to ad, on AOP.
but if ads can keep it alive, maybe iits not a bad idea.
as long as no pop-up kinds
like a small banner at the btm of the site.
One important thing to know about "automatic" ads, is that you cannot strictly control them. I mean: you can define keywords, ban some urls, etc ; but some bad ads will always be displayed (including gold selling sites).
There will never be Ads on AOP, it's contrary to its policy/spirit of a nice amateur fansite built with good will and motivated contributions.
However, I'm going to experiment it on Atlantica-db (it's also something I have to learn concretely). Classic Google Adsense advertising, easy to hide with plugins (as Adblock on Firefox), and no pop-ups.
PS: the most important upgrade to the hosting (SQL private server) costs 8-12€ / month, it wil be hard...
lols the gold selling-sites are all over many other mmorpg sites.
but they're quite popular........

With Adsense you can block alot of URL's (At least 184). There should be more than enough blockable URL's to cover all the gold selling sites. You can't define keywords to block (Google works out what keywords you and advertisements have in common based on your page's contents), you can only define url's to block.
Quote from Adsense:
The Competitive Ad Filter enables you to block specific ads, such as competitors' ads, from appearing on your pages. Entering a more general URL will block a wider range of ads; entering a more specific URL will block a smaller range of ads. For example, by entering a top-level domain such as "example.co.uk", you will also block all ads that link to any sub-directories of that domain, like "forums.example.co.uk"

I personaly don't like adverts, but as long as its done decently (As in not having adverts splattered everywhere, limited to a max of 2 adverts) then its fine. Its better to have companies with large wallets pay for the hosting bills (Or at least some of it) then to rely on donations. It would be a far worse fate for AOP to die due to lack of funds than to have 1-2 adverts on the site.
AOP will start dying as soon as Atlantica-db provides a better database - and their "spirits" are not the same (to me).
It's hard to explain, but I put ads on AOP, I'd have the feeling to "besmirch" all this project.
Majority of all community sites which have to pay for there own hosting seem to generally have adverts to help pay for them. Having an advert on the site wouldn't change what AOP is at its core, its not like it will make you rich.
An impressive share, I simply given this onto a colleague who was doing a bit analysis on this. And he in fact bought me breakfast because I discovered it for him.. smile. So let me reword that: Thnx for the treat! However yeah Thnkx for spending the time to debate this, I really feel strongly about it and love reading extra on this topic. If potential, as you become expertise, would you mind updating your blog with extra particulars? It's highly useful for me. Massive thumb up for this blog submit!
